Great answer, John! I would add to this by saying the pocket square should complement the shirt (and tie). And if you want to match, go with the shirt--not the tie.

Pocket squares CAN look old fashioned; it depends on how they are folded. Personally, I only do a TV fold (straight, rectangular) or wear these shibori ones.

If you wear a tie, it should either match or complement the tie. If you wear a shirt with no tie, it should either matc or complement the shirt. In both cases, I prefer the hankerchief to complement as oppose to match, but it is all personal taste.

If you wear an overcoat, you can also wear a pocket square. The logical question is "should I wear a hankerchief in the suit pocket or the overcoat pocket?" The answer: both!

hi there, i want to wear a pocket square with my suit i have been discouraged by many people who think that it is old fashioned. what is your opinion on this? also, should the pocket square match the color of the tie or the shirt?

thanks
