Mens Ready Made Outfit: Sophisticated Shorts with a Blazer

August 20th, 2008

Feeling the love for this set?  Here’s more information about it.

How do you manage to look sophisticated in shorts?  Pair them with a blazer for instant chic.  Here’s how to do it:

Mix and match fabrics for the jacket and shorts.  What makes this combination so chic is the seemingly effortless pairing of the blazer and shorts.  It’s not a shorts suit–so pick a jacket and shorts in different fabrics and colors.  A couple of easy color combinations?  Navy and grey (as pictured), and khaki and white.

Wear a button down shirt.  Maintain the somewhat formal feel of the outfit by wearing a button down shirt instead of a tee.  The shirt need not be perfectly pressed to be sophisticated; in fact, the casual feel of the blazer and shorts combo calls for a shirt that’s ever so slightly wrinkled.

Slip on a pair of closed toe shoes.  After all, you are wearing a blazer.  Now’s not the time for flip flops.

Not feeling love for this outfit. I don’t think one should aim to look ’sophisticated’ when putting on shorts. Shorts and a blazer make me think of three-year-old ring bearers in weddings, who at that age look cute in the miniature version of a sophisticated adult.

Shorts go to two levels of dress: relaxed daytime with flip flops and a t-shirt. Bump it up a notch to casual nighttime with stylish sneakers (Diesels, Pumas) and a sharp one-color athletic jacket in a good brand (Fred Perry, Lacoste). I don’t see the need to try and pull shorts into the realm of ’sophisticated’ by pairing it with anything. If weather is the issue, non-wool pants with a shirt with sleeves rolled to the elbows would do for the next step.

I beg to differ; it’s all about fit.

    From the Sartorialist:

His outfit works (in my mind) mostly because of the cut. Trim shorts, a structured jacket. No doubt, it is a casual look, but I think it is quite sophisticated.

Trim short do help but… we’ll have to agree to disagree. :)

I have to say… pass. Even the most fashionable men look like little British schoolboys with this look.
