Wonderful article. I enjoy a good wristwatch. However, now many luxury wristwatches are so large that they get in the way of the shirt's cuff. If the watch is under the sleeve it can't be seen. If it is out of the sleeve it interferes with the shirt's fit.

Solution? I found myself unbuttoning the left cuff to allow for the watch. Sprezzatura? You decide.

Love this discussion.

wearing your wristwatch outside your shirt is very common in Italy, and is done purely for practical reasons.

Don't like Stefano's look. That IS sloppy. In his case, he'd do better to tighten the tie. Then the last button undone on the coat would be fine. And are those chinos rolled up? Ugh.

I've seen the watch-on-the-sleeve thing done before. I'm ambivalent about it. Is it really all that "artful"? I think it's a bit weird, i.e., not a good look.

Finally!! "it’s not stylish, it’s sloppy." You got that right. Excellent article. If guys only knew how unattractive that "sloppy little boy" look is! I think you nailed it with "...an otherwise impeccable outfit." That's what's missing today-- the impeccable-ness.

I live in Los Angeles and agree with you here: "When it’s done wrong, you have stereotypical “Los Angeles fashion”- ugh I think that's an oxymoron LOL

Sprezzatura is a great word, too!

Hi Trisha, John,

I really like the loosened tie, top button undone, "just got off of work" look because I like the laid back, nonchalant look it conveys (or at least I THINK it conveys). I do admit though, that it looks sloppy. Any tips on pulling it off without looking sloppy, but rather confident and dare I say, stylish?

Thank you!
