Maggie, for summery why not try a bright color with some yellow in it? Like an orange or even a spring green? Or if you have any short-but-dressy cotton blouses, with maybe a sweet little floral print, that might help you move away from sexy without being too informal.

For the clutch, I would also pick a bright yellowy color. A small bag with shorter straps would also look dressy, and if all I had was a black or gray bag I could tie on coordinating ribbon or a scarf to perk it up.

hey i have a question!! please answer me if you can. i bought a dress for my boyfriends grad and its flowery like this one and short but its black and white…what color cardigan and clutch should i wear??? i think im wearing black heels. Please help, its 2 days away and this outfit is so cute but the dress i bought is black and white. its very tight fitting and i want it to look less sexy and more summery cute. heres the dress:

This looks great—however, my colleagues and I felt that this look may be more suited to a graduate or young adult guest as opposed to a parent of a graduate. Do you have dress suggestions for women 45+ who are in decent shape? I’ve looked in vain for attractive and vibrant floral pattern dresses that cover a bit more. Plenty of sheaths in black and natural linen, but these seem rather plain for the occasion.
