I find that the color/pattern of the plaids is more than enough; the rest of the outfit should be subdued. I love the black/white buffalo check underneath a navy cloth peacoat (black works great too). It works well with canvas pants to give the look a kind of urban finish. Sometimes with some white Converse Jack Purcells, other times with desert boots, depending on weather and temps. Pairing with jeans striikes me as a little too ordinary but it might work. I say why fight it and go full tilt: ditch the cords and go with some tough looking jeans. But then blue and red don't mix well, so you'd need some type of gray or maybe black jean.
