check out this ski jacket, second outfit down. it's alliance julia jacket (price isn't terrible) and i love the cinched waist so whether you're preference is skinny or baggy pants you don't look like a big ol' garbage bag!

I have lived in a cold climate my whole life and have many thoughts on this.
First, avoid jackets with rounded yokes or raglan sleeves. Look for set-in sleeves or other tailored armscyes.
Second, Look for a style with a placket that covers the zipper. This looks sleek and prevents the wind from coming through the zipper.
Third, Buy a coat for warmth. Freezing for fashion does not look dignified or attractive. If it doesn't get truly cold where you are (like -5 celsius or below), then you probably don't NEED a down, puffer-style coat. A well-constructed wool coat with a chamois in the back an a flannel-backed lining will keep you warmer than most "fashion" parkas. Also, mid-thigh or knee- length is good, shorter probably won't keep you really warm, longer is unnecessary.
Fouth, look for good-quality down filling, not feathers, not polyfill.
Fifth, avoid puffers with flannel or fleece linings. They add bulk and stick to the clothes underneath, looking awkward.
And lastly, remember that there's something to be said for the element of surprise--arriving at your destination warm and unzipping your cozy coat to reveal your true dimensions and a fabulous outfit.
