What’s hot in Tokyo? The sweaterdress. Women are wearing sweaterdresses over leggings, over trousers, over tights, and under perfectly tailored overcoats. Wherever you live, this perfectly versatile style is a key one to invest in this winter season.
What to look for in a sweaterdress?
Fit: IMHO, the best sweaterdresses aren’t completely form fitting; rather, they drape over your figure.
Weight: Thicker knit sweaterdresses tend to hold their shape better over time. Another added bonus is that they tend to be more forgiving of figure flaws (e.g. a less than flat tummy). However, thinner knit sweaterdresses have the benefit of more elegant draping.
Color: For the most versatile look, grey is a great go-to color. Black and navy are also good options, but don’t feel constrained to neutrals. If you dare, try a brighter shade, like red, mustard, or green.
Our fave? This grey cowlneck sweaterdress from Banana Republic. Not only is the drape beautiful, but it also has half-sleeves, which helps to camouflage heavy arms. Pair it with opaque tights, boots, and a structured coat.

We asked: Would you wear Strappy Cage Heels?
You said: No to Strappy Cage Heels, with a 56% to 44% vote.
Style tip? Strappy Cage Heels first got their start on Yves Saint Laurent’s Fall 2008 runway in ankle boot form, and they’ve since made their way from the runway to real women’s closets, albeit in less extreme forms. But how do you wear this dramatic, almost architectural shoe? Cage heels are best worn with simple, solid colored outfits - when you wear cage heels, the look is all about the shoes. Try cage heels with a black pencil skirt and blazer combo for a look that’s dramatic but still accessible.
Next question: Ponchos had their turn in the style spotlight a few years back, and now they’re back for Fall 2009. But what do you think? Tell us, would you wear a Poncho? Cast your vote on the sidebar!

We asked: Would you wear Faux Fur Vests?
You said: No to Faux Fur Vests, with a 77% to 23% vote.
Style tip? As the perfect layering piece, the Vest is a key item for Fall. Shaggy, faux fur vests, however, aren’t for everyone. They’re great for adding a punch of texture to your look, but they also add visual weight. If you dare to wear the faux fur vest, pair it over a fitted top with high armholes for the sleekest look. On the bottom, try another fitted piece - such as straight or skinny jeans, or a slim fitting skirt. Finish off the look with a pair of tall boots or heels so as to visually elongate your legs.
Next question: The Cage Heel is a hot catwalk trend that has made its way from the runway into real stores. But what do you think about these uber-strappy shoes? Tell us, would you wear Cage Heels? Cast your vote on the sidebar!

Even if you don’t want to overhaul your wardrobe for Fall, you can get a whole new look by updating your accessories. Fall 2009’s accessories are polished, sophisticated, and full of drama - and will serve your wardrobe well for seasons to come. What accessories do you need to add to your wardrobe? Here’s our picks for the five key accessories you need for Fall 2009:
The Cowl Neck Scarf

Echo Double Infinity Scarf | $48 at Bloomingdales
Perfect for adding a bit of texture to an otherwise plain outfit, the double infinity scarf is a large circle scarf that you can wrap around your neck twice. We love how it adds a pop of color - and how Echo’s design (and non-chunky knit) makes the look wearable in real life, not just the runway.
Long Gloves

ASOS Basic Long Angora Mix Gloves | $18.24 at ASOS
How do you continue to wear your summer short sleeves this fall? Slip on a pair of long gloves. The ruching on these angora gloves adds an extra touch of sophistication.
The Statement Necklace

Hearts on Chains Necklace | $7.80 at Forever 21
Draw attention towards your face with a statement necklace. Wear a single one - or drape multiple necklaces on yourself for an extra dramatic look.
The Buckle Belt

Double Buckle Elastic Belt | $7.80 at Forever 21
Cinch your waist with an extra wide belt - perfect for giving your figure structure when wearing blousy tunics and oversized sweaters. The buckle detailing adds just the right amount of polish.
The Headband

Elastic Bead Trim Headwrap | $5.80 at Forever 21
We’ve been in love with headbands ever since we saw Leighton Meester’s Blair Waldorf sporting them in the first season of Gossip Girl. Instead of going all-out with an oversized floral headband, why not try a sleek, embellished headwrap? Very 20s-esque flapper.

Style tip? Stock up on long cardigans. They’re great for layering under jackets for Fall and Winter, and they’re just as versatile for Spring. Wear a long cardigan over your minidress or blouse/skirt combo (as at Lela Rose), skinny belt optional. Or use your cardigan to play with textures, as Alexander Wang does. Just don’t wear the cardigan sans-bottom, as seen at Michael Kors! Clearly a runway-only look.

Style tip? The trend for Spring 2010 is polka dots with a twist. The new polka dot is seen oversized, textured (instead of printed), and organically shaped. Wear a single type of dot (like the crocheted dots at Tory Burch), or mix things up with different patterns (as at Marc by Marc Jacobs). But don’t stop there - you can also mix different textures of dot patterns, as Reem Acra did with a standard-issue polka dotted top paired with a skirt with a more organic dot pattern.

Style tip? If you want to make a statement with your shoes, go bright and step into a pair of red (or red-orange) shoes. They provide a colorful foundation for a neutral colored outfit (as at Philip Lim), but they also anchor patterns. Case in point? The dresses at Nanette Lepore and Marc by Marc Jacobs. When you go bold with bright shoes, there’s no need for your handbag to match. Try a neutral colored handbag (perhaps in a oversized silhouette) to finish off the look.

Style tip? Motorcycle jackets are already lending an edgy vibe to Fall fashion, and they’ll continue to keep fashion on its toes for Spring. You’ll traditionally find motorcycle jackets in black leather (or faux-leather, to be animal-friendly), but for Spring, you’ll have a variety of fabrication and color options. We love the squeaky cleanliness of a white motorcycle jacket - and the versatility of a khaki colored jacket. Wear it long (as at Philip Lim) or cropped (as at Tracy Reese) - just add one to your closet.

Style tip? Summer 2009 was minidress season - and it looks like Spring/Summer 2010 will be no different. So while you’ll want to put your minidresses into storage for Winter, keep them handy for Spring thaw. But even though hemlines are rising to well above knee level on the runway, it doesn’t mean that you have to match the short skirt in real life. A hemline falling a few inches above the knee maintains the essence of the mini silhouette without being unwearable.
Two tips for donning a minidress:
(1) If you’re baring your legs, keep your upper half covered up - with sleeves, a cardigan, or even a jacket draped over your shoulders.
(2) If you love the mini silhouette but have less than perfect legs, try wearing tights or leggings underneath the dress.
