Mens Fall Fashion Preview: Five Pieces You Need for Fall 2009

Guys, it’s time to start embracing Fall Fashion.  Key menswear trends include a strong Americana vibe that gives a nod to quirky British style.  Think preppy classics with special details - but details that don’t take themselves too seriously.  Our sartorial recommendation for the season?  Invest in classic pieces that will keep your look sharp not only for Fall 2009, but for Fall 2010 and beyond.  Here’s five pieces that you’ll want to have in your wardrobe for seasons to come:

The 3/4 Length Duffle Coat

Gloverall Made in London Duffle Coat | $459.75 at ASOS
How to wear it: Make the bright red color really pop with a pair of dark denim jeans.

The Classic Flannel Shirt

How to wear it: Pair this cozy flannel shirt with gray denim and distressed boots for a look that’s urban meets rugged.

The Bright Layering Tee

Cotton Waffle Knit Crewneck | $40 at Banana Republic
How to wear it: Let a bit of color peek out from under your gray or navy cardigan.  Added bonus for you?  The extra soft waffle knit fabric.

The Slim Shawl Collar Cardigan

Cable Knit and Sweat Cardigan | $64.37 at ASOS
How to wear it: Wear this shawl collared cardigan over a slim fit shirt.  We love the texture of the cable knit pattern, which pairs nicely with other coarse textures like a medium wale corduroy.

The Sporty Quilted Jacket

How to wear it: We love how you can take this chic quilted jacket anywhere this Fall.  Whether you’re catching a game or strolling downtown, this jacket is a practical, stylish choice.  Pair it with a bright scarf for a playful look.

Five Fall 2009 Womenswear Trends Under $100

Labor Day is over, so it’s time to start saying goodbye to Summer and hello to Fall.  And while we’ll miss the carefree days and warm weather, we’re looking forward to the drama and layering of Fall fashion.  As we approach Fashion Week Spring 2010, we’re taking a look back to our favorite looks from Fashion Week Fall 2009.  Our favorite looks feature bold silhouettes–and great details that make the looks as exciting close-up as they are from far away.  Here’s our top 5 trends from Fashion Week Fall 2009 - each for under $100:

The Structured Coat
asos-pintuck-mac_090709
ASOS Pintuck Mac | $82.76 at ASOS
How to wear it: Let a pretty blouse spill out from under this gorgeous pintucked mac jacket.  Finish off the look with a pair of killer heels.

The Dramatic Sweater

Ilana Dolman Sweater | $44.50 at Delias
How to wear it: Go for a dramatic big-over-small look by pairing this roomy dolman sweater with straight leg or skinny jeans.

The Asymmetric Zipper

Rare Asymmetric Zip Dress | $55.17 at ASOS
How to wear it: This asymmetric zip dress makes a statement by itself - so no need to go overboard on accessories.  A sleek clutch and a pair of heels will do the trick.

The Color Grey

drawstring-sweater-top_090709
Drawstring Sweater Top | $24.90 at Heritage 1981
How to wear it: Use this deep grey sweater as a layering piece.  Don’t you love the texture of the knit?

The Disco Influence

sequin-one-shoulder-top_090709
Sequin One Shoulder Top | $19.80 at Forever 21
How to wear it: Party like it’s 2009 in clothes that would have worked equally well in 1979.  Since sequins are so eye-catching, we recommend opting for a partially sequined top (or dress) instead of one that’s completely covered.  Keep this dramatic top company with a pair of chic booties.

How to Wear Suspenders

How to Wear Suspenders
Feeling the love for this set?  Here’s more information about it.

Suspenders aren’t exactly on the forefront of fashion, but they can create a pretty snappy look when paired with the right pieces.  The key is to work with the tailored feel of the suspenders - but not so much that the outfit doesn’t have a sense of humor.  We’ve crafted a tongue-in-cheek look with suspenders that manages to evoke an air of urban sophistication.  Here’s how to get the look of sophistication in suspenders:

1.  Start with your base: a suspenders skirt (or pants) paired with a crisp button-down shirt.  Bonus points for a fun color or pattern.
2.  For flair, add a tailored cape over the fitted base.  The cape adds a dash of elegance to the outfit.
3.  Continue on with the sophisticated, tailored feel of the outfit with a structured handbag.  The tan bag pairs nicely with the blues in the outfit.
4.  Finish off the look with an accessory that adds a bit of fun to the outfit: a bright red bootie.  The cool weather bootie pairs nicely with the cape - and it adds a punch of color (and humor) to the entire look.

How to Modernize 1980s Style

Modern 1980s Style
Feeling the love for this set?  Here’s more information about it.

You can embrace 1980s style without pulling out your off the shoulder tops and shoulderpads.  Even better, you can pull off the retro look in style.  The key is to nod to the past without copying it verbatim.  We’ve crafted an outfit that combines a few key 1980s trends (bright color, sweatshirt tops, and body-conscious skirts) without making it look like you’re partying like it’s 1989.  Here’s how to get the modern 1980s look:

1. Start with a fitted base layer: a sweatshirt top and a banded skirt.  Both the sweatshirt top and the body-hugging skirt nod to 1980s trends (oversized sweatshirts, bandage dresses).  Added bonus points for the cartoon dinosaur top, which adds a bit of humor to the otherwise edgy outfit.
2.  Add a shot of bright color with a loosely fitted jacket.  The contrast of the oversized jacket with the fitted base makes the silhouette more visually interesting.
3.  Finish off the look with a pair of cage-inspired booties.  We love the edginess of the uber-strappy ankle boots.

You Said: Yes to Wedge Heels

omiru-poll-result-wedge-heels_083009

sasha-open-cut-wedges_083009We asked: Would you wear Wedge Heels?

You said:  Yes to Wedge Heels, with a landslide 81% to 19% vote.

Style tip? Heels, as always, are big on the trend radar.  The twist this time around is Wedge Heels, which provide a stable platform on which to walk (great news for those of us who want a few extra inches without the pain that comes from high heels).  Because Wedge Heels give you that stable platform, they also visually weigh the foot down.  If you want the stability without all of the visual weight, try an open wedge, like the shoe shown at left.

Next question: Roomy, Pleated Pants are a big trend for Fall.  But what do you think?  Tell us, would you wear Pleated Pants?  Cast your vote on the sidebar!

Casual Chic: How to Wear a Hoodie

How to Look Pulled Together in a Hoodie
Feeling the love for this set?  Here’s more information about it.

March to the beat of your own music and outfit yourself in comfy casual basics with a twist.  This look, which pairs a slouchy hoodie with a fitted base layer, feels very downtown cool.  How to get the look?  The beauty is in the details, which make these basics feel new again.  Here’s how to achieve casual chic in a hoodie:

1.  Start with a fitted, patterned top and a pair of straight leg jeans.  We love the plaid pattern on this empire waist top–very on-trend.
2.  Layer on an oversized hoodie to contrast with the fitted style of the top.  Bonus points for bright colors (like this bluish purple) and interesting details (like the double rows of buttons).
3. Slip on a pair of tall boots.  Tuck the jeans into the boots to show off the lacing and the buckle detail.
4.  Finish off the look with a roomy tote - and (optional) a pair of old-school, full sized headphones to connect to your iPod.

How to Wear Your Summer Dresses This Fall

How to Wear a Summer Dress this Fall
Feeling the love for this set?  Here’s more information about it.

You don’t have to put away your summer dresses when the temperatures start to drop.  The beauty of fall layering is that your summer clothes can be just as wearable as they were when temperatures were soaring.  The key is just to pair them with different clothes.  For summer, you would pair your minidress with strappy sandals and sunscreen.  But for fall, you can pair the same dress with textured tights, ankle booties, and an oversized jacket.  Here’s how to get the summer dress look this fall:

1.  Start with the foundation of a warm weather minidress.
2.  Keep your legs covered up with textured tights and ankle boots.
3.  Layer on an oversized jacket, which contrasts with the slim fit of the minidress.
4.  Finish off the look with a lightweight scarf (note how the small plaid echoes the larger buffalo check plaid pattern on the dress) and a handheld tote.
