Omiru’s 16-Piece April 2012 Capsule Wardrobe

Omiru's 16-Piece April 2012 Capsule Wardrobe
Want to take a closer look at the capsule wardrobe?  Here’s more information about it.

Spring has officially sprung, and this April, we’re recharging our wardrobes with print & pattern and daring new silhouettes.  From the more conventional dots and stripes to bohemian tie-dye and fantastic florals, our April capsule wardrobe is brimming with eye-catching patterns.  But print and pattern isn’t all that’s new - we’ve added a few key silhouettes, from a classic pajama top to a bodysuit to a pair of joggers.

Today, we’ll outline the 16 key pieces you’ll want this month to keep your wardrobe on point.  And throughout April, we’ll show you how to mix and match these pieces, along with standard basics that everyone has in their closet, into key looks that you can recreate with your own wardrobe.  From left to right, top to bottom, here are the 16 pieces you’ll want to have in your closet this month.

The Pajama Top
Silk Pyjama Style Shirt | $96 at Topshop
Fashion Flash - Pajamas aren’t just for the bedroom anymore.

The Floral Biker Jacket
Mary Katrantzou Printed Silk Faille Biker Jacket | $3,430 at Net-a-Porter
Love the drama of this piece - but not so much the price.  Fast fashion chains like Zara, H&M, Topshop, and Forever 21 may have more affordable versions.

The Moto Jacket
R13 Leather Moto Jacket | $1,395 at La Garconne
Biker jackets are investment pieces - and while the price is still out of reach, we love the zip detail and the buttery leather on this jacket.  Look for these details in more affordable jackets.

The Bright Cardigan
Jackie Cardigan | $62 at J Crew
Say hello to Spring with a pop of yellow.

The Polka Dot Top
Bon Bon Blouse by Tsumori Chisato | $498 at La Garconne
The draped collar and gathered drawstring add to the femininity of this polka dot blouse.

The Colorblocked Top

Proenza Schouler Blocked Knit Top | $625 at La Garconne
Geometric colorblocking gives this modern knit top a vintage appeal.

The Striped Top
Heart Print Striped Cotton Top | $135 at Net-a-Porter
A heart print makes for a playful take on the classic striped tee.

The Sequinned Top

Metallic Sequinned Tank | $24.50 at Delias
Get your shine on with this sequinned racerback tank.

The Paneled Bodysuit
Petite Bra Back Bodysuit | $40 at Topshop
What we love about this bodysuit is the mesh cutout side panels.

The Printed Pencil Skirt
Dolce & Gabbana Eggplant Print Stretch Crepe Skirt | $815 at Net-a-Porter
Bold and beautiful, this skirt was the standout piece from Dolce & Gabbana’s SS12 collection.  We love the charm of the allover eggplant print.

The Leather Shorts
3.1 Phillip Lim Drawstring Leather Shorts | $795 at La Garconne
If you’re going to wear leather shorts, try them in a city short style in lieu of short shorts.

The Jogger Pants
Petite Woven Joggers | $64 at Topshop
Jogging pants are a fresh foil for a stuffy button-down top.

The Polka Dot Mini
Polka Dot Skirt | $34.50 at Delias
Fun, flirty, and completely on target for spring.

The Tie Dye Shorts
MOTO Tie Dye Hotpants | $64 at Topshop
Have a little fun with hot pants in an eye-catching tie-dye print.

The Spring Green Shorts
3" Chino Short | $45 at J Crew
A classic cotton twill chino short in a happy go lucky hue.

The Navy Chiffon Skirt
Crinkle Chiffon Skirt | $118 at J Crew
Layers of crinkled chiffon give this skirt depth and texture.

We’re out on vacation this week - but we’ll be back on Monday, April 9 with the first of our capsule wardrobe looks.

Cheers,
Trisha

March 2012 Lookbook: How to Wear the Pastel Blazer

Omiru's March 2012 Lookbook: How to Wear a Pastel Blazer
This look is part of Omiru’s March 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece March 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Your classic black blazer probably gets a decent amount of play in your closet rotation - so it’s time to give it a rest this spring.  Instead of reaching for your basic black blazer, why not try one in a pastel color?  These delicious candy colors are an easy way to freshen up your spring wardrobe - and here’s how to get the look in a blush colored blazer:

1. Start with a spring-y foundation: a white blouse over a pair of denim shorts.  If you live in a colder climate, swap out those shorts for full pants - and opt for a blouse in a longer sleeve.
2. Layer on your pastel blazer.  With such a neutral foundation, the blazer really shines.  A white blouse and denim bottoms is the easiest combo to pull off - if you dare, try a blouse in a complementary color to make the blazer visually pop.  Or play with a trio of colors with the blazer, top and bottom.
3. Grab a bold handbag - note how the red of the bag ties back to the blush color of the blazer.  We also tied a pink skull scarf on the handbag for extra visual interest.
4. Finish off the look with neutral accessories: a pair of rounded sunglasses in tortoise and a pair of black and brown colored sandals.

How will you wear the pastel blazer?

March 2012 Lookbook: How to Wear Color from Head to Toe

Omiru's March 2012 Lookbook: How to Wear Color from Head to Toe
This look is part of Omiru’s March 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece March 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

If you dare, create an look with nothing but color. Trick is to choose a dominant color scheme that works well together, and then choose a secondary color scheme that complements it.  Here, the dominant color scheme is blue and yellow - and the secondary color scheme centers around magenta and red.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with a base of blue and yellow: a bright yellow tank layered over mint jeans, paired with a royal blue blazer.
2. Now that we have the primary color scheme down, we chose a secondary color scheme of red and magenta.  The cross-body handbag exemplifies this secondary color scheme, but it was also echoed in the tips of the shoes.
3. Layer on a set of bracelets that marry the primary and the secondary color schemes to give the look a sense of cohesion.

March 2012 Lookbook: Your Go-To, Go Everywhere Look

Omiru's March 2012 Lookbok: Your Go-To Casually Polished Look
This look is part of Omiru’s March 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece March 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Some days (who are we kidding - most days), you’re running around from place to place, and you need a single outfit that works for work and for after hours.  This is especially challenging when you need to go from polished to relaxed without the benefit of going home to change.  Challenge Accepted!  We’ve crafted a look that does double duty, casually polished if you will.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with a striped button down blouse over a pair of jeans.  Depending on how casual or polished your look needs to be, you’ll want to choose a pair of jeans appropriately.  For a more formal look, opt for dark rinse with a straight leg.  If you can go more casual, you can try more interesting rinses and treatments - and you can try styles from boyfriend to skinny.
2. Layer on a hoodie.  We chose navy to tie back to the striped top and the denim jeans.
3. If you’d like to polish up the look, there’s no faster way to do this than a standout jacket.  This red and blue cropped jacket makes your look spiffy without being too stuffy.
4. Finish off the look with go-anywhere accessories: a bright red laptop bag and a pair of comfy ballet flats to take you wherever you need to go.

What’s your go-to, go-everwhere look?

March 2012 Lookbook: Skulls and Sweetness

March 2012 Lookbook: Skulls and Sweetness
This look is part of Omiru’s March 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece March 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Park Avenue preppy can be a bit too prim and proper for a girl with a playful sense of style.  Keep your look from growing stuffy and stale with a few choice details - like a pair of skull patterned ballerina flats.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with a prim and proper base: a knee-length pleated skirt with a collared blouse.  These are no ordinary pieces though - we love the contrast collar on the blouse, and the rich green on the pleated skirt is anything but traditional.
2. Toss on a cropped jacket to keep your arms warm.  Don’t you love the ribbon tie closure on the jacket?
3. Finish off the look with purposefully playful accessories - retro inspired cat eye sunglasses, a cuff clutch (so you’ll never misplace your handbag), and a pair of ballet flats adorned with a tiny skull motif.

How will you make your look more playful?

Arlenis Scarf Print Evening Gown

arlenis-evening-gown_031912

From the moment I saw the Arlenis evening gown in the BCBG showroom last Fall, I was in love.  So when opportunity presented itself (in the form of a flurry of wedding invites), there was nothing to do but hunt down this dress.

What I love about this dress is its fantastic all-over scarf print - a classic pattern, but done in a way that definitely reads modern.  Added bonus?  It’s flattering on less than perfect figures…so if you want to help yourself to an extra serving or two of cake, no one will be the wiser.  This gown is an investment piece, for sure, but one that you’ll reach for time and time again.

$428  at BCBG.

March 2012 Lookbook: How to Wear Bright Pants

Omiru's March 2012 Lookbook: How to Wear Bright Pants
This look is part of Omiru’s March 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece March 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Bright Pants are a signature piece for spring - but how do you wear them?  You can use bright pants as a pop of color in an otherwise neutral look, but we encourage you, if you dare, to take the look one step further.  Instead of highlighting bright pants as the focal point of your look, build your outfit around the pants, adding color and pattern to extend the playfulness of the pant through the entire look.

1. Start with your brightly colored pants paired with a blouse with a fun pattern on the collar.  By itself, these two pieces complement each other in personality - but they also provide a solid foundation for this playful look.
2. For added color, toss on this striped sweater in muted primary colors.
3. Finish off the look with colorblocked accessories - a pair of pumps with a pink heel, a coral and tan foldover bag, and statement bracelets in vibrant colors.

How will you wear brightly colored pants?
