How to Wear Brightly Colored Socks

Bright socks? Yes, you read that right, and yes, you can wear them without looking like you stepped off the runway. You can incorporate brightly colored socks into your regular wardrobe. The key is to keep the rest of your outfit simple so as to make your socks stand out. Here’s how to get the look of bright socks:
1. Start with your foundation: a plain white button down shirt and a pair of jeans. As usual, fit is key here so that the look is sophisticated, not sloppy. (Alternatively, sub in grey trousers for the dark straight leg jeans, if you’re going for a dressier look.)
2. Add the key element: a pair of bright orange socks. We chose orange to complement the dark blue jeans.
3. Finish off the look with a brown belt and wing tip shoes, for a dressier touch.

Good call on the gray trousers — I’ve found that a nice medium gray makes bright colors seem a little less in-your-face. I love your posts for men, especially the ready-made-outfits, and I’m looking forward to great looks for the fall with more possibilities for layering and jackets.
Can I make a request? A lot of working guys like me have to dress business casual (that can mean a lot of things, but in my office it’s basically no jeans or tennis shoes, but nothing as formal as suits or ties unless you want to look out of place). Any ideas on stylish, affordable looks that stand out from the army of Dockers and light blue shirts?

I frankly don’t “get” the idea of bright socks. Seems a little jarring, maybe even unsophisticated. Not something I’d be comfortable with.

MJ wore his pants short and we could see his socks – super! My male friend wears bright socks to ballroom dance in and flashes color all over the dance floor as he takes big steps – perfect! But the average guy doesn’t move his legs up and down enough to even show off his socks until he’s sitting down. I would say if someone wants to do this, he has to wear pants just a hair too high – and be absolutely sure that the length looks intentional.
