Casual Chic: How to Wear a Hoodie

March to the beat of your own music and outfit yourself in comfy casual basics with a twist. This look, which pairs a slouchy hoodie with a fitted base layer, feels very downtown cool. How to get the look? The beauty is in the details, which make these basics feel new again. Here’s how to achieve casual chic in a hoodie:
1. Start with a fitted, patterned top and a pair of straight leg jeans. We love the plaid pattern on this empire waist top–very on-trend.
2. Layer on an oversized hoodie to contrast with the fitted style of the top. Bonus points for bright colors (like this bluish purple) and interesting details (like the double rows of buttons).
3. Slip on a pair of tall boots. Tuck the jeans into the boots to show off the lacing and the buckle detail.
4. Finish off the look with a roomy tote - and (optional) a pair of old-school, full sized headphones to connect to your iPod.

I bought a purple hoodie at Maurice’s. I love it because it is more fitted, is longer in the sleeves and the body. In my case, a hoodie is a very practical item when camping. At night, sleeping in a tent or camper, I wear my hoodie as it gets cold in the mountains, even in summer. I can pull the hood over my head and preserve body heat (which mostly escapes via the head, by the way) and feel toasty warm. But a hoodie makes a wonderful casual fashion statement as well. It is youthful without making anyone older look silly. Anyone of any age can wear a hoodie – just make sure it doesn’t have a sloppy fit on you!
