How to Look Smart in a Short Sleeved Shirt

Trading in your long sleeved shirts for short sleeve ones doesn’t mean that you have to hand in your pulled together look.  Short sleeves definitely read as casual, but you can spiff up the right short sleeved shirt by pairing it with a few key elements.  To keep the look modern and clean, we paired a madras plaid short sleeved shirt with a pair of lightweight flat front khaki trousers from Save Khaki, belted with a textured belt.  We finished off the outfit with a pair of leather sneakers (a sporty touch) and a dandy-ish trilby hat.

Here’s what you need to create the look yourself:

Red Madras Plaid Shirt | $39.50 at Gap

Save Khaki Lightweight Trouser | $100 at Ron Herman

Tan Vintage Leather Belt | $36 at Topman

3 Colour Straw Trilby Hat | $40 at Topman

T56 Leather Perf Sneaker | $80 at Tretorn

Personally I couldn’t do the hat but everything else is nice. Perfect timing on this article–I just bought my first short-sleeved buttondown shirt in many, many years. It’s a madras from J. Crew. I feel a little like I’m back in high school, but it is so nice.

@Gary – Which shirt did you buy? Short sleeved shirts feel so fresh this season. It’s a youthful look, yes, but one that can work for all ages.

@Tebonin – Completely agree that these leather shoes would pair nicely against a pair of dark jeans (for that extra pop).

Great pick, Gary. The green-blue color combo is quite fetching!

I love this combo! Alas, hubby won’t wear short-sleeve button-downs as he feels they look too old-man-ish. I also think this type of hat would look great on him. He is definitely a hat man. Any suggestions on where to get hats that have a bigger band size?

I don’t know that this is really that much of a summer “trend” A plaid short sleeve with khakis and white sneakers is sort of generic. Even the trilby hat, while fun, isn’t exactly the best way to make your mark in a crowd.

I think a change of shoe would help make this look smarter. A nice driving moccasin maybe. And for the plaid, I’d go with something lighter, less “thick”. Mixed in with some ray bans, and you’ll look more classy and less hipster.
