The Perfect Pleated Skirt

American Apparel Perfect Pleated Skirt

Just like a schoolgirl pining after a first crush, j’adore pleated skirts.  Luckily, this season’s pleated skirt, with variations in bright colors and fantastic patterns, feels miles away from its schoolgirl roots.  American Apparel’s above-the-knee length version combines a figure flattering cut (great for you, regardless of personal architecture) with a stunning royal blue color.  Feeling demure?  Wear it with a white blouse cinched with a cummerbund belt.  But if you’re feeling the fun, go grab a bright orange blouse and watch heads turn as you walk on by.

$54  at American Apparel.

February 2012 Lookbook: Tame Pastels with Black (and White)

Omiru's February 2012 Lookbook: Pastels for a Pop
This look is part of Omiru’s February 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece February 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Designers were on a sugar high this season with their cotton candy and bubble gum pastels.  If you’re a girly girl, you can embrace the look full on.  But if you’re not, you don’t have to miss out.  All you have to do is cut the sugary look with a dose of black (and white).  The resulting look is one part serious, one part sugar, and wholly stylish.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with a foundation of basic black with a silk tank and a leather skirt.
2. Cut the black with a dose of white.  A white patterned blouse and a white snakeskin handbag add dimension through texture.
3. Accessorize with a gold spike bracelet and a pair of aviators - one part classic, one part cool.
4. Finish off the look with a pair of minty pastel heels.  Bonus points for an eyecatching texture, like this sporty mesh.

Silk Blouse with Metal Collar Tips

Silk Shirt with Metal Collar Tips

True to our mission of style for all, we’d like to take the opportunity to feature standout pieces that are as stylish as they are attainable.  We’re loving this deliciously drapey shirt, as it exudes elegance - with just a hint of the wild.  Giving a nod to the fashion of the Wild West, this 100% silk shirt features something special: decorative metal tips at the collar.  We’ve been digging metal collar tips since Balenciaga’s Spring 2011 show, and we’re loving that these decorative collars are feeling increasingly wearable.

$79.90  at Zara.

Omiru's February 2012 Lookbook: Modern Day Indiana Jones
This look is part of Omiru’s February 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece February 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Adventure awaits you, whether you’re ready or not.  So embrace it with an outfit that befits a modern explorer.  By juxtaposing the rugged clothes of an adventurer with the sophistication of the city, you’ll have a look that’s perfect for urban escapades and trailblazing off the beaten path (well, once you switch out the shoes).  Here’s how to get the look:

1. A pilot’s smock shirt paired with a drapey maxi skirt provides a foundation that’s equal parts urban and rugged.
2. Accessories make the adventurer - so grab your fedora, a gold bracelet (notice the snake design), and a wraparound belt to cinch your waist.
3. Platform heels work for short adventures - but if you’re going off the beaten path, opt for flats.
4. Finish off the look with a fetching leather backpack that’s equal parts practical and sophisticated.

What will you wear for your next adventure?

February 2012 Lookbook: All Work But Ready to Play

Omiru's February 2012 Lookbook: All Work But Ready to Play
This look is part of Omiru’s February 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece February 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Long before geek chic swept the fashion world, we embraced the idea that serious dressing does not equal a serious lack of style.  Look sharp at work with tailored lines and structure - but reveal your sense of play with pattern and color.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with a base that mixes work and play: a structured blouse with a captivating pattern over a pair of leggings.
2. Blazers mean business, and the addition of this navy blazer turns the look from weekend to work.
3. Add pattern and color - a turquoise handbag makes a statement, while the snakeskin pumps add further texture to the look.
4. Don’t forget your glasses - they automatically add gravitas to the look.

February 2012 Lookbook: Balance Neons with Pastels

Omiru's February 2012 Lookbook: Balance Neons with Pastels
This look is part of Omiru’s February 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece February 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Spring heralds the return of neon brights.  I’m wholeheartedly embracing the burst of color, with the understanding that these loud colors can be challenging to wear.  My favorite trick is to balance out the neon brights with subtle pastels.  The resulting look is bright - but not overwhelming.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with a neon foundation: a bright yellow jacquard sweater over a neon green tweed skirt.  Lots of color, and even more texture.
2. Accessorize with pastel pieces that tone down the brights - a pair of grey suede pumps to ground the look, and a pale peachy pink handbag that plays off the yellow and green beautifully.
3. Finish off the look with a neutral colored necklace - a silver cap and ball necklace that really completes the look.

February 2012 Lookbook: Totally Stacked (Bracelets)

Omiru's February 2012 Lookbook: Totally Stacked (Bracelets)
This look is part of Omiru’s February 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece February 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Life isn’t a party every day, but you can always create one yourself with the right accessories.  Get your arm party going with an alluring set of stacked bracelets.  What I love about this set is its simplicity - three pieces that mix luster and textures in a way that is completely additive to the look.

1. Start with a solid base: a leather skirt topped with a shredded tee for texture.
2. Layer on a blouse.  Bonus points for adding additional texture without overcomplicating the look.
3. Stack your bracelets.  The best look combines bracelets in odd numbers - 3 or 5 works best.  Notice how each piece plays off each other, whether through color, luster, or texture.
4. Grab your clutch and slip on an eyecatching pair of cutout booties to finish off the look.

Omiru’s February 2012 Lookbook: A Little Bit of Leopard

Omiru's February 2012 Lookbook: A Little Bit of Leopard
This look is part of Omiru’s February 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece February 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

You can’t walk the streets without seeing spots this season.  No, you’re not on safari - but animal prints, especially leopard, are all the rage.  While I love the drama of the leopard look, it’s starting to feel a bit overplayed.  So how do you show your spots without being part of the herd?  Go with a little bit of leopard instead of a lot.  Ditch the leopard dress and opt for something a little more understated.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with textures.  I layered a lace shell on top of a leather skirt for a look that’s a little bit naughty and a little bit nice.
2. Layer on a patterned blouse for some extra coverage.
3. Add your little bit of leopard with this fetching leopard print handbag.  Optional tip? Add a pair of sunglasses in a spotted print to tie back to the leopard print handbag.

February 2012 Lookbook: Triple Play Layering with the High Low Dress

Omiru's February 2012 Lookbook: Triple Play Layering
This look is part of Omiru’s February 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece February 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

If you’re looking for a kick ass layering piece, look no further than the high low dress.  Higher in the front and lower in the back, this dress looks great layered or alone, giving you supreme versatility.  PS: If you’re headed out of town, this piece is a no-brainer to pack.  I’ve styled the high low dress as the foundation of a trio of layers - here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with your basic high low dress.  This plain black dress features a round neckline and short sleeves - which will keep it relevant come spring.
2. Add your next layer over the dress: an oversized sweater with a gorgeous unexpected jacquard texture.
3. Finish off the base look with your third layer - a sequinned collar that instantly elevates the other two knit layers.
4. Slide on a cuff bracelet, grab your handbag, find your platforms, and you’re ready for the day.

How would you layer with the high-low dress?

February 2012 Lookbook: Curious Accessories

Omiru's February 2012 Lookbook: Curious Accessories
This look is part of Omiru’s February 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece February 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

While your clothes make a statement, your accessories often speak louder about who you are.  It’s all in the details - whether it’s a bold color on your purse or a fanciful detail on your heels (hello, wings!).  In this look, the foundation clothing feels all business - but the finishing accessories allow the look to play.  Here’s how to get the look

1. Start with a neutral foundation: a drapey grey tee over a taupe skirt.  Easy shapes in comfortable colors.
2. Layer on a navy jacket to keep your arms warm.  The navy is softer than black on the grey and taupe foundation, and it’s more visually interesting than another shade of grey.
3. Now have some fun with your accessories.  We chose a few pieces with personality - an orange and red chain necklace that provides a funky counterpart to a fuchsia and red handbag.  Note the details on the bracelet (see that snake head?) and the heels - wear these, and you literally have wings.  Usually it’s best to sport these statement pieces separately - but here, the effect is additive.

What’s your favorite fanciful accessory?
