April 2012 Lookbook: Get the Look of Bright Bold Florals

Omiru's April 2012 Lookbook: Get the Look of Bright Bold Florals
This look is part of Omiru’s April 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece April 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Bright bold florals are one of the key trends in a season overflowing with print, pattern and color.  While they can be intimidating to wear, you can get the look easier than you’d think.  The trick to wearing these bright bold florals is to have them take center stage - and to build the rest of the look around the colors in the print.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with a clean foundation - a prim and proper button-down blouse paired with a knee-length skirt.  What we love about this combination is how the two shades of blue look together.
2. Add the star of the look - a bright bold floral print biker jacket.  Because the base of the look was monochromatically blue, this bold floral jacket adds a pop of color without clashing.

3. Finish off the look with extra pops of color that echo the hues in the jacket - a pair of red sunglasses, sandals with a red heel, and a bright yellow purse that’s as bold as it is ladylike.

April 2012 Lookbook: Hearts for the Rain

Omiru's April 2012 Lookbook: Hearts for the Rain
This look is part of Omiru’s April 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece April 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Just because the rain won’t go away doesn’t mean that your fashionable side can’t come out to play.  As April showers continue to rain down, you can brighten your day with hearts and heartwarming accessories.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with a quintessentially French foundation - a striped bateau tee (bonus for this heart detail) and a drapey below-the-knee skirt.  For cold days, cover up with a protective raincoat, ideally with a padded lining for warmth.
2. It’s raining out, so grab your rainboots.  A pair of golden hunter boots adds metallic sheen - and pairs so nicely with the navy in the skirt and shirt.
3. Warm up a rainy day with playful accessories.  We love this heart scribble transparent umbrella (as well as how it implores the rain to "go away") - and a seemingly rainsplotched patterned clutch purse in pulsating reds and purples.

What do you wear when the rain just won’t go away?

April 2012 Lookbook: Sequins and Sweatpants

April 2012 Lookbook: Sequins and Sweatpants
This look is part of Omiru’s April 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece April 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Sequins and sweatpants sound like a combination best found on the runway rather than real life.  But different as they are, they look surprisingly natural together.  Sequins add drama and dimension to the casual sweatpant - together, they form an outfit that’s as visually stunning as it is comfortable to wear.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start with a pair of sweatpants.  The trick to getting the look right is to find a fitted pair of sweatpants.  Too baggy of a pant will mar the long and lean silhouette you’re looking to create.  Bonus points for a sweatpant with a cuffed tapered leg - all the better to pair with heels.
2. Add your sequins with a tank top.  Choose a cropped or just below the waist length top so as to not cover the detail at the top of your sweatpants.
3. For this tough yet casual look, add a moto jacket in a complementary color.  With a palette of metallics and black, we love the pop of lightness that comes with a white jacket.
4. No sneakers for this look - to class up your sweatpants, slip on a pair of heels.
5. Finish off the look with some edgy accessories - a cuff clutch, a geometric architectural metal ring, and a pair of angular cat-eye sunglasses.

Scarf Print Blouse

News flash: scarf prints are no longer just for scarves.  We’re loving this luxurious print on blouses, skirts, and dresses for spring.

Perfect for sprucing up a work look, this scarf print blouse is seriously stylish without feeling too precious.  If you want to be sure to turn heads, wear this black and white beauty with a printed skirt in the same color scheme.  For a look that’s more accessible, you can pair this scarf print blouse with a jet black pencil skirt or pair of trousers.

April 2012 Lookbook: How to Wear Bold Oversized Prints

Omiru's April 2012 Lookbook: How to Wear Bold Oversized Prints
This look is part of Omiru’s April 2012 Lookbook series, which builds upon our 16-Piece April 2012 Capsule Wardrobe.  See more information about this look.

Traditional fashion rules have us believe that solid colors are safe - and that patterns and prints are hard to wear.  But these rules are being put to the test this season with the flourishing of oversized prints.  What we love about these boldly scaled prints are that they alone can make an outfit - but they’re also a foundation item to build upon.  The trick to getting these bold oversized prints right is to have them take center stage - but to amplify their visual power with additional pattern and print.  Here’s how to get the look:

1. Slip on the foundation piece of the look - your pencil skirt in an oversized eggplant print.
2. But don’t let the eggplant print crowd out other patterns and colors.  Try pairing the eggplant print skirt with a sweet polka dot top, which accentuates the femininity of the skirt.
3. Choose a sweater in a color that plays off the printed skirt.  A bright yellow pairs well with the skirt, dominated with purples and greens.  We love how the yellow and purple make each other visually pop.
4. Finish off the ladylike look with a pair of round sunglasses, a garden party pair of white sandals, and a bright blue cross-body bag that adds extra dimension to the color palette.

Omiru’s 16-Piece April 2012 Capsule Wardrobe

Omiru's 16-Piece April 2012 Capsule Wardrobe
Want to take a closer look at the capsule wardrobe?  Here’s more information about it.

Spring has officially sprung, and this April, we’re recharging our wardrobes with print & pattern and daring new silhouettes.  From the more conventional dots and stripes to bohemian tie-dye and fantastic florals, our April capsule wardrobe is brimming with eye-catching patterns.  But print and pattern isn’t all that’s new - we’ve added a few key silhouettes, from a classic pajama top to a bodysuit to a pair of joggers.

Today, we’ll outline the 16 key pieces you’ll want this month to keep your wardrobe on point.  And throughout April, we’ll show you how to mix and match these pieces, along with standard basics that everyone has in their closet, into key looks that you can recreate with your own wardrobe.  From left to right, top to bottom, here are the 16 pieces you’ll want to have in your closet this month.

The Pajama Top
Silk Pyjama Style Shirt | $96 at Topshop
Fashion Flash - Pajamas aren’t just for the bedroom anymore.

The Floral Biker Jacket
Mary Katrantzou Printed Silk Faille Biker Jacket | $3,430 at Net-a-Porter
Love the drama of this piece - but not so much the price.  Fast fashion chains like Zara, H&M, Topshop, and Forever 21 may have more affordable versions.

The Moto Jacket
R13 Leather Moto Jacket | $1,395 at La Garconne
Biker jackets are investment pieces - and while the price is still out of reach, we love the zip detail and the buttery leather on this jacket.  Look for these details in more affordable jackets.

The Bright Cardigan
Jackie Cardigan | $62 at J Crew
Say hello to Spring with a pop of yellow.

The Polka Dot Top
Bon Bon Blouse by Tsumori Chisato | $498 at La Garconne
The draped collar and gathered drawstring add to the femininity of this polka dot blouse.

The Colorblocked Top

Proenza Schouler Blocked Knit Top | $625 at La Garconne
Geometric colorblocking gives this modern knit top a vintage appeal.

The Striped Top
Heart Print Striped Cotton Top | $135 at Net-a-Porter
A heart print makes for a playful take on the classic striped tee.

The Sequinned Top

Metallic Sequinned Tank | $24.50 at Delias
Get your shine on with this sequinned racerback tank.

The Paneled Bodysuit
Petite Bra Back Bodysuit | $40 at Topshop
What we love about this bodysuit is the mesh cutout side panels.

The Printed Pencil Skirt
Dolce & Gabbana Eggplant Print Stretch Crepe Skirt | $815 at Net-a-Porter
Bold and beautiful, this skirt was the standout piece from Dolce & Gabbana’s SS12 collection.  We love the charm of the allover eggplant print.

The Leather Shorts
3.1 Phillip Lim Drawstring Leather Shorts | $795 at La Garconne
If you’re going to wear leather shorts, try them in a city short style in lieu of short shorts.

The Jogger Pants
Petite Woven Joggers | $64 at Topshop
Jogging pants are a fresh foil for a stuffy button-down top.

The Polka Dot Mini
Polka Dot Skirt | $34.50 at Delias
Fun, flirty, and completely on target for spring.

The Tie Dye Shorts
MOTO Tie Dye Hotpants | $64 at Topshop
Have a little fun with hot pants in an eye-catching tie-dye print.

The Spring Green Shorts
3" Chino Short | $45 at J Crew
A classic cotton twill chino short in a happy go lucky hue.

The Navy Chiffon Skirt
Crinkle Chiffon Skirt | $118 at J Crew
Layers of crinkled chiffon give this skirt depth and texture.

We’re out on vacation this week - but we’ll be back on Monday, April 9 with the first of our capsule wardrobe looks.

Cheers,
Trisha
